Radcliffe on Trent Branch

The Radcliffe on Trent Branch of the Labour Party serves members in Radcliffe on Trent, Shelford and Newton. We meet on the first Thursday of the month in the lounge of the British Legion Club (17, Main Road) from 19:30 to about 21:00. Drinks are available to buy at the bar for anyone who wants one. After the meeting has finished, members are welcome to carry on talking, not necessarily about politics, but widening out to include sport and local news/gossip.

Members are informed of meetings by means of a newsletter sent out by the Branch Secretary, including the minutes of our previous meeting and an agenda for the next one. As well as standing items for reports to the membership, our meetings always include interesting and topical discussions centred around politics and campaigning, sometimes involving a guest speaker.

We always maintain a presence in the village, from running a stall at the Radcliffe Carnival to holding fund-raising events like concerts and quizzes – as well as street stalls during local and national election campaigns. Some of our funds go towards producing a village newsletter named the “Radcliffe Voice” which we publish and deliver twice a year. Although a Labour Party publication, it publishes a lot of general news items and features of a non-political nature and has earned a good reputation in the village, often being referred to as “the local newspaper”. Branch members volunteer to distribute election, other campaign flyers and the “Radcliffe Voice” to every house in the area covered by the Branch.

We have two Facebook pages named “Radcliffe on Trent Labour Party” and “Radcliffe Voice” and also a WhatsApp group “LP RoT Branch” which enables us to quickly communicate with one another. We also have a Branch and “Voice” email address, “ToRoTLabour@gmail.com” and “ToRadcliffeVoice@gmail.com” respectively.

Politically, Radcliffe has been Conservative for a long time but we have made progress in recent elections. Although all our Borough and County Councillors remain Conservative we came within 17 votes of displacing one of them in the most recent borough election. Perhaps the character of the village is changing
